UNIQLO is making strides in workplace inclusivity in Malaysia through its collaboration with Early Autism Project (EAP) Malaysia. This initiative aims to provide employees with the tools and training needed to better engage with and support individuals with disabilities, fostering a more inclusive environment for both staff and customers.
EAP Malaysia specializes in individualized behavioral therapy for those with autism, using the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) approach. Since December, they have been offering training to UNIQLO employees, enhancing their ability to interact effectively with people with disabilities.
Evelyn Tan, UNIQLO Malaysia’s Director of Legal and Sustainability, shared insights into the partnership and its potential to positively impact the disabled community.
Training Store Managers for Inclusivity
According to Tan, the main goal of the partnership is to equip store managers with the skills needed to effectively work with individuals with disabilities.
“We want our employees to have the tools to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere that benefits everyone, whether they’re part of our team or our customer base,” Tan explained. She added that UNIQLO aspires to set an example for accessibility within the retail sector.
The company currently employs 27 individuals with disabilities across its Malaysian stores and is committed to growing this number as it expands.
EAP’s Role in Employee Development
The training programs provided by EAP are designed to build employees’ confidence and competence in supporting individuals with disabilities. These sessions cover practical skills and strategies for understanding and meeting diverse needs.
“This training empowers our team to adapt to various situations and offer personalized service to each customer,” Tan said.
Jochebed Isaacs, Director of EAP Malaysia, highlighted that the training focuses on key areas such as effective communication, accessibility, and creating a supportive workplace.
Accessibility in Physical Stores
UNIQLO is also working to improve store accessibility, with the Damansara Avenue Square outlet serving as a prime example. This location features universal fitting rooms, wheelchair-accessible facilities, and designated parking for individuals with disabilities.
However, Tan emphasized that inclusivity extends beyond infrastructure. “It’s about ensuring that everyone feels respected and valued, whether they’re shopping with us or working alongside us,” she said.
Inclusive Hiring Practices
UNIQLO Malaysia takes an inclusive approach to hiring, focusing on an individual’s ability to perform tasks with reasonable accommodations rather than imposing strict limitations based on the severity of their disability.
Tan explained that employees with disabilities are provided with equal opportunities for compensation, benefits, and career progression. The company also offers tailored support, such as job coaching, to help employees excel in their roles.
Collaborations for Greater Impact
Recognizing the challenges faced by individuals with autism, UNIQLO has partnered with Enabling Academy (EA), a program by Gamuda Berhad that supports employment transitions for adults on the autism spectrum.
Through this collaboration, UNIQLO offers a Retail Training Course that combines classroom learning with hands-on experience in stores. The program is led by employees with disabilities, who share their knowledge and experiences with trainees.
Several EA graduates have already joined UNIQLO’s workforce, and the company remains committed to expanding these opportunities. Tan also expressed a willingness to partner with other organizations to create meaningful initiatives for individuals with disabilities.
